Andrew Vilcan - JHW Teacher of the Year 2023-2024

Congratulations to J. H. Williams 2023-2024 Teacher of the Year,  Mr. Andrew Vilcan.

Andrew is a UL graduate with a degree in Applied Mathematics and a graduate of Northern Arizona University with an M.Ed. in Educational Leadership.

Prior to joining our school, Andrew spent two years as a campus minister and  two years as a math teacher at two high schools in Phoenix, AZ.

He has spent four years at JHW  teaching 7th and 8th-grade math. Andrew currently serves as a  Math coach, supporting 6th-8th grade math teachers. He is also serving as a mentor to a teacher resident from UL and is working towards his content leadership.

When asked what motivates him as a teacher he replied that he "believes all students are capable of learning and enjoys creating an environment for their growth." He also explained that, " he views teaching akin to solving a complex puzzle." Andrew credits his teaching success towards the support of his coworkers, especially those in the 8th-grade hallway. He also expresses his appreciation towards his administration for supporting smooth classroom functioning.

On campus you can spot Andrew enjoying and supporting the school's Books and Games Club.

His administration celebrates him as a "dedicated asset to the school who goes above and beyond to help students succeed and assist the administration when needed."
